Sofia Sablon

Sofia Sablon serves as our new College and Dual Enrollment Advisor at Westwood Christian School, where she provides comprehensive, individualized guidance to students throughout the college and career planning process. She works closely with students and families on standardized test preparation (SAT and ACT), college research and selection, application strategy, essay development, recommendation coordination, and navigating scholarship and financial aid opportunities. Her structured and student-centered approach ensures that each student is well-prepared to pursue postsecondary goals with clarity and confidence.

A natural leader and mentor, Sofia draws on her experience as the oldest of six children, during which she developed a strong foundation in responsibility, guidance, and service. She is deeply committed to Christian education and believes that each student possesses unique, God-given talents and a distinct purpose. She is passionate about helping students identify their strengths and align their academic and career pathways with their calling.

Sofia is completing her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, further strengthening her expertise in student development and institutional leadership. In addition, she is actively expanding partnerships with local and out-of-state colleges and universities to create meaningful opportunities for Westwood students. Through these efforts, she strives to ensure that every student has access to a wide range of higher education options and is equipped to transition successfully into college and beyond.

At Westwood Christian, preparing students for life after high school is not a senior-year scramble; it is a four-year journey. Our College Advisor walks alongside each student and family from freshman year through graduation day, turning college and career planning into a clear, step-by-step path. The goal is simple: every Westwood graduate should leave with a plan, the confidence to pursue it, and a sense of the calling God has placed on their life.

Your Student’s Roadmap to College & Beyond

Our College Advisor is a personal guide, project manager, and encourager for each student's journey. Her work includes:

Personal advising & discovery

• One-on-one advising meetings with every student
• Helping students identify their strengths, interests, and God-given gifts
• Career and vocation exploration, including majors and future pathways
• Guiding students to discern the path that fits who God made them to be
• Guidance on which scores to submit and where testing is required

Dual Enrollment planning

• Dual Enrollment selection and eligibility
• Guiding students toward the right dual-enrollment options and university requirements

Applications

• Building a balanced, personalized college list (including strong Christian colleges and universities)
• Managing applications, deadlines, and requirements from start to submission
• Coaching students through the personal essay and statement
• Coordinating letters of recommendation and official transcripts
• Helping students build an activities, service, and leadership resume

Paying for college

• FAFSA guidance (the federal aid form opens around October 1 of senior year)
• Help understanding and comparing financial aid offers
• Finding and applying for scholarships, merit, need-based, local, and faith-based, with a scholarship calendar to stay ahead of deadlines

Decision & transition

• Interview preparation and mock interviews
• Guidance on campus visits and college fairs
• Support comparing acceptances and making the final choice
• Help with enrollment deposits, next steps, and the transition to freshman year

Alternative and non-traditional paths

• Support for students considering trade and vocational programs, the military, gap years, or dual-enrollment head starts because college is one path, not the only path

Partnering with families

• Partnering with parents to keep them informed every step of the way
• Hosting information nights and college-planning workshops

The College Admissions Checklist

Every family should know what it takes to be a college-ready student. Our advisor makes sure nothing is missed:

Academic record

• A strong GPA and transcript
• A college-preparatory course load, typically four years of English; three to four years of math (through Algebra II and beyond); three years of lab science; three years of history/social studies; two or more years of the same foreign language; plus arts and electives
• Course rigor that shows a student challenged themselves

Testing

• SAT or ACT scores, and with many colleges now requiring tests again, the smart plan is to prepare and test even where scores are "optional"

Application pieces

• The completed application (Common App or the college's own)
• A personal essay or statement
• One to three letters of recommendation
• An activities and leadership résumé
• Official transcripts

Financial pieces

• The FAFSA (opens around October 1 of senior year)
• The CSS Profile for some private colleges
• Scholarship applications

Sometimes also

• Supplemental essays, a portfolio, an audition, or an interview
• After acceptance: an enrollment deposit and updated records

Roadmap grade by grade

When does it start? Freshman year. Colleges consider all four years, so students who plan early have the most options. Here is how the journey unfolds.

9th Grade — Foundation

• Build strong study habits and a solid GPA from day one (freshman grades count)
• Get on the college-prep course track
• Explore activities, service, and interests
• Begin thinking about personal strengths and gifts

10th Grade — Exploration

• Keep grades strong and coursework challenging
• Take the PSAT for practice
• Deepen involvement and look for leadership roles
• Begin exploring careers, majors, and types of colleges
• Start a preliminary list of schools to learn about

11th Grade — Preparation (the pivotal year)

• Take the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall (it qualifies students for National Merit)
• Take the SAT or ACT in the spring, with time to retake
• Build a balanced college list — reach, match, and safety schools that fit academically, financially, and spiritually
• Visit campuses, attend college fairs, and meet college representatives
• Research and begin applying for scholarships
• Ask teachers for recommendation letters in the spring
• Start brainstorming essays over the summer

12th Grade — Application & Decision

• Finalize the college list and confirm deadlines (early action/decision vs. regular)
• Submit applications in the fall
• Polish essays and gather recommendation letters and transcripts
• Retake the SAT/ACT early if needed
• Complete the FAFSA when it opens around October 1
• Keep applying for scholarships
• Prepare for any interviews
• Compare acceptances and financial aid offers in the spring
• Make the final decision and submit the enrollment deposit (usually by May 1)
• Get ready for the transition to college

What should students start thinking about now?

Even before the applications begin, we encourage every student to reflect on a few questions:

• What are my strengths and the gifts God has given me?
• Which subjects and activities energize me most?
• What kind of career or calling am I drawn toward?
• What kind of college fits me — a Christian college, a large university, a small school, close to home or farther away?
• How will my family and I pay for it, and which scholarships are a good fit for me?
• Am I taking challenging enough classes and building a record of involvement, service, and leadership?

The earlier a student begins asking these questions, the more prepared and confident they will be.
